Besides ensuring smooth wheat procurement process, the Sangrur district has also ranked on the top in Punjab by lifting 54 percent procured crop from the grain markets. Deputy Commissioner Mr. Ghanshyam Thori told that as per the report of Punjab Mandi Board released on April 21, Sangrur has emerged as leader by lifting 131640 metric ton wheat from the grain markets of the district. He added that 243,778 metric ton crop has been procured in the district by various agencies till April 21 and to ensure adequate space for new arrival, the lifting process has been sped up. Mr. Ghanshyam Thori said that Sangrur contributes more than 10% share in total wheat production of Punjab and adequate arrangements have been done to ensure hassle free procurement in the district. DC said that besides ensuring required space in grain markets, the timely lifting of gunny bags will also ensure safety of foodgrains by transporting it to storage godowns.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration will also ensure all other arrangements in the markets to prevent spread of coronavirus. He appealed all stakeholders of procurement process to follow the advisories and safety protocols issued by the state government and cooperate with the district administration to combat this outbreak. He said that arrangements are made by district administration to ensure hand washing and social distancing in grain markets. He added that farmers should also strictly follow the guidelines and regulations to avert the threat of contamination.
DC said that the passes have been issued to commission agents for the smooth arrival of wheat crop but there are reports from several grain markets that the farmers are flouting the quantity norms laid by the administration. He appealed the farmers not to flout guidelines as it could pose threat to their safety from coronavirus and could also lead to shortage of gunny bags.
