  International Women’s Day celebrations were held at the Baba Kala Mehar Stadium Barnala wherein athletic event was organized under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. Female players in under 14 age group category competed in 100 m and 400 m races and long jump. District administration also initiated self defence training for women.

The female athletes and their in charges were encouraged by Deputy Commissioner Barnala Mr Tej Pratap Singh Phoolka, ADC Mr Aaditya Dachalwal and assistant commissioner (grievances) Madam Kiran Sharma.
SDM Mr Varjeet Walia had organized the vent whose started with the inaugural address by SP (headquarter) Madam Harwant Kaur who motivated girls to be front runners in academics and sports equally. Sports coach Gurvinder Kaur too talked to the girls while Squadron Leader Air Force Station Barnala Davinder Kaur called upon girls to get their dreams come true.

In the long jump competition Kamal Preet Kaur from Government High School Uppali got gold, Gagan deep Kaur from Government Middle School Patti Sekhwan secured silver and Harpreet Kaur from Govt senior secondary smart school bagged bronze.
Similarly in 400 m race Harpreet from Attargarh secured first place, Nurpinder from Attargarh secured second and Arshpreet from Karamgarh secured third place. In 100 m Manpreet from Uppali, Simranjit from Thulliwal and Jasdeep from Uppali secured third place.

Deputy Commissioner Barnala Mr Tej Pratap Singh Phoolka inaugurated the self defence training camp for 50 females that would last over next one month. The five days a week session will be conducted wherein the LBS college students will be the first batch. A demo regarding the same was held by judo coach Master Krishan Chauhan. Girls from those ten villages of Dhanaula villages has participated that have skewed sex ratio and the main aim of holding such events was to sensitize people on rights of girl child.
The female workers awarded for their good services today included chairman zila parishad Sarabjit Kaur, from police department Lakhvir Kaur, Harmandeep Kaur, Meena Rani, Asha workers Kulwinder Kaur, Ambika Rani, ANM Javsir Kaur, Paramjit Kaur, principal Iqbal Kaur, Bhupinder Kaur, Davinder Kaur, women sarpanch Manjit Kaur, Charanpal Kaur, SHG group Sukhmani Group, Ekta Aajeevika, Mata Sahib Kaur group, Anganwari supervisor Kulwinder Kaur, Karamjit, Gurjit, Anganwari worker Ruhi Bansal, Sarabjit Kaur, Gurmeet and girls with special needs.

Concluding the function SDM Mr Varjeet Walia congratulated everyone on occasion of International Women’s Day. APRO Madam Jagbeer Kaur conducted the stage.

District sports officer Balwinder Singh, district program officer Kulwinder Singh, district child protection officer Abhishek Singla, assistant director youth services Vijay Bhaskar Sharma, Simardeep Singh from education department and others were also present.
