Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Thursday expressed deep grief over the sad demise of the country’s legendary boxer Kaur Singh. Olympian Kaur Singh, who was 74 years old, passed away this morning at a private hospital in Kurukshetra.
Describing Kaur Singh’s departure as a big loss for the Indian sports field, especially boxing, Sports Minister Meet Hayer said that Padma Shri and Arjuna Award winner Kaur Singh had brought laurels to Punjab and the country on the international stage. Apart from winning a gold medal in the 1982 Asian Games, Kaur Singh also won gold medals in Asian Championship and King’s Cup. He also represented India in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He fought a historic bout with World Class Boxer Muhammad Ali. He served in Indian Army and Punjab Police for a long time. The State Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made the biography of this distinguished boxer part of the school syllabus for this academic session. . Meet Hayer said that Kaur Singh’s life of struggle and sporting achievements will remain an inspiration for generations to come. Hailing from Khanal Khurd village in Sangrur, Kaur Singh earned a global reputation with her hard work and dedication. While paying homage to the great boxer, the Sports Minister prayed to God to rest the departed soul at his feet and give strength to the family and sports lovers behind.
